PROCEDURE
I.
Warming-up
T: Hello,
my dear pupils! Today we continue talking about London. By the end of the
lesson you’ll get to know much about London sights, some interesting facts
about its political life and the most popular means of transport.
To make the start of our lesson bright,
let’s sing a song “London Bridge is falling down”.
(Pupils sing a song “London Bridge is falling
down”.)
II.
Main Part
1) Talking
about London
T:
Before we start
our work, tell me, please, what do you know about one of the oldest and the
most beautiful cities in the world – London?
(Teacher asks
questions, pupils answer them)
1)
What
is London?
(P: it’s the
capital of England and the UK)
2)
People
who live there are called …
(P: Londoners)
3)
What
is the population of the city?
(P: It’s more than eight million people)
4)
When
was it founded?
(P: In 43 AD)
5)
What
else do you know about the city? (Pupils’ own answers)
2)
Presentation of the new material
T: I see that you are interested in the topic. Do you
want to know more about the city? Then watch and listen attentively and try to
remember.
(Pupils watch
the presentation “London Sights”, teacher comments the slides)
Slide 1. Now you can see Queen Elizabeth II. She’s the
head of The United Kingdom. Her birthday is officially celebrated in Britain on
the second Saturday of June each year.
Slide 2. Buckingham palace is the official London
residence of Her Majesty. It is one of the best known and most important
symbols of the British monarchy.
Slide 3. The Queen has very little power in the state affairs.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
is the head of Her Majesty's Government. He is really powerful. Everyone in the
UK and abroad the country knows his address – 10, Downing Street.
Slide 4. Here are some slides on the London Sights. I’m sure,
you can name them. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the
clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London.
Slide 5. The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the
South Bank of the River Thames in London, England. It is also known as the
Millennium Wheel.
Slide 6. Tower Bridge. It is very beautiful and old. It was
built during 1886–1894.
Slide 7. The Monument to the Great Fire of London. It is in
the City of London. It was built between 1671 and 1677.
Slide 8. when tourists come to London, they want to go round. It is
impossible to see all the city travelling on foot. They usually take one of the
most well-known means of transport. A hackney or hackney carriage
(also called a cab, black cab, hack or London taxi) is a carriage
or automobile for hire. As you can see the cars are black and have
old-fashioned look.
Slide 9. A double-decker bus is a bus that has two
storeys or decks. Red double-decker buses are used for mass transit in London.
Slide 10. “The Tube" is the first metro of the
world. The London Underground has been known as The Tube since 1890, when the
first deep-level electric railway line was opened.
3) Singing
a song
T: Now,
you seem to be a little tired. Stand up! We’ll move for a while. Sing along ” The
Wheels on the bus go round and round ”
(Pupils make movements and sing along)
4) Listening
T: At the previous lesson you read the text “A Trip on
the Thames”. Listen to it again to revise.
(Students listen
to the text. The teacher hands in cards with tasks)
5)
After-listening
T: Now look at the exercises on your cards. First you
have to make questions putting intermixed words in the correct places. Next step is to match the answers and to put
them in the answer sheet.
To make special questions correctly, mind the rules.
(Teacher
explains the rules using the table on the blackboard)
T: If everything is clear, get to work and do the
exercise.
(Students do exercises
and check the results together with the teacher)
T: When reading the text you came across some
prepositions. Look at the cards and learn the words.
(Teacher shows cards with prepositions of
place and explains their meaning)
T: Now you know the difference between the prepositions.
In the next exercise you are asked to put the words in their places.
(Students do exercises and check the results
together with the teacher)
III Summing-Up
1. Home
Task
T: At
home you must do exercises 1 and 2 on page 92 in your Workbooks. If you have
worked hard enough at today’s lesson, it won’t be difficult for you.
2. Evaluation
3.
T: As
to my mind, today’s lesson was very interesting. Have you found out anything
new about the capital of the UK? What was it? (Pupils revise the new material).
Now you can make special questions and
